MANILA, Philippines — Rain showers are expected in parts of the country on Friday due to three weather systems, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Pagasa weather specialist Obet Badrina said that the northeast monsoon or “amihan” will continue to prevail in most parts of Luzon. 

The shear line, or the convergence of warm and cold winds, will trigger rain in parts of southern Luzon, while the low pressure area (LPA) will affect Palawan and many parts of  the Visayas and Mindanao.

“Amihan”, shear line

“Sa malaking bahagi ng Bicol kasama ang Quezon Province, lalawigan ng Occidental, Oriental Mindoro, gayundin ang area ng Marinduque at Romblon ay magiging maulan sa araw na ito dulot ng shear line,” said Badrina.

(A large part of the Bicol region, along with Quezon province, Occidental and Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque and Romblon will be rainy today due to the shear line.)

“Sa bahagi ng Cagayan Valley region, Cordillera at Aurora, dulot ng amihan ay magkakaroon ng mahinang pag-ulan,” added Badrina.

(The amihan or northeast monsoon will bring light rains to parts of Cagayan Valley, Cordillera, and Aurora.)

Metro Manila forecast

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, Badrina reported, will see generally fair weather with isolated rain showers due to the “amihan.”

Vis-Min forecast

The LPA (formerly Tropical Depression Querubin) last spotted over the coastal waters of Mahinog, Camiguin will bring rains to Visayas, Mindanao, and Palawan.

Unemployment among young people and college graduates jumped from 13.2% in June to 17.1% in July, as some 12 million students entered the labour market, before the August figure rose to its highest level since the National Bureau of Statistics decided to change the methodology to not include students in December 2023.

“Magiging maulan din sa malaking bahagi ng Visayas dulot ng epekto ng shear line at low pressure area. Magiging maulan din sa Palawan ngayong inaasahan nating kikilos nga papalapit sa bahaging ito ng ating bansa yung LPA,” stated Badrina.

(It will be rqiny in a large part of the Visayas due to the shear line and the low pressure area. Palawan will also experience rains due to the expected movement of the LPA near the area.)

“Malaking bahagi ng Mindanao ang makakaranas ng maulap na kalangitan na may kalat-kalat na pagkulog at pagkidlat dulot ng LPA na kumikilos sa bahaging ito ng ating bansa,” added Badrino.

(Many parts of Mindanao will experience cloudy skies and thunderstorms due to the LPA.)

Meanwhile, gale warnings have been raised over the following areas where 2.8 to 4.5 meters – high waves are possible:
