After a rather drab opening half an hour, the game sprung into life as Johnston headed home from a Tom Fellows cross down the right.

The Republic of Ireland international missed two good chances to complete a hat-trick after the break, while Josh Maja also went close to adding further gloss to the scoreline in a dominant Baggies win.

Carlos Corberan's side moved up to seventh in the Championship, level on points with sixth-placed Middlesbrough, while Bristol City - without a win in four matches - are in 12th, seven points from the play-off positions.
